A Remote DBA by Any Other Name

Remote DBA, fractional DBA, DBA as a service, managed database services. Data support goes by a lot of names. Here’s what each term means, which ones are the same, and which point to something different.
A Remote DBA by Any Other Name

By Corey Beck, VP Service Delivery at DataStrike

‍

In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet asks, “What’s in a name?” and concludes that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

‍

An IT director looking for help with SQL Server or Oracle runs into the same question because the people and services that keep data running go by many names. The question comes up more often now. In DataStrike’s 2026 Data Infrastructure Survey Report, 60% of organizations said they rely on managed service providers for their data infrastructure, more than double the share in the previous year’s survey.

‍

Most of the time, remote DBA services, managed DBA services, DBA as a service and DBA services describe the same work. They all point to an outside team handling database administration on a continuing basis. A few terms that sound alike point somewhere else. Managed database services, for example, usually refer to a cloud provider’s hosted database, and buying one when you need the other leaves a gap nobody owns.

‍

The People Who Keep Data Running

‍

What is a database administrator (DBA)?

‍

A database administrator, or DBA, is the person responsible for keeping databases available and performing well. The day-to-day work covers backups and recovery testing, performance tuning, patching and upgrades, capacity planning and monitoring that catches problems before users notice them.

What is a remote DBA?

‍

A remote DBA is a database administrator who works from outside your building, usually as part of a managed services provider’s team. Remote DBA services range from offshore ticket queues to senior, U.S.-based engineers who learn your environment and stay with it, so the questions to ask are where the engineers are based and who will touch your systems. DataStrike’s remote DBA services are delivered by a 100% onshore team.

‍

What is a fractional DBA?

‍

A fractional DBA gives you part-time or on-demand access to a senior database administrator, without the cost or long-term commitment of a full-time hire. The fractional model suits companies whose database workload is real but doesn’t justify a full-time hire, and it can also cover the hours a small team can’t, like overnight incidents and holiday weekends. Fractional DBAs often work remotely, which is why the two terms get blurred. Remote describes location, while a fractional arrangement defines how much of an expert’s time you get and how it scales as your needs change.

‍

What is a database reliability engineer (DBRE)?

‍

A database reliability engineer, or DBRE, is a newer title adapted from site reliability engineering. DBREs take on DBA work with a heavier emphasis on automation, treating database changes like code and building monitoring and recovery into deployment pipelines. At a mid-market company, a DBRE is largely a DBA with a modern toolkit, and the same skills show up under both titles.

‍

How Does a Database MSP Fit with Your IT Team?

‍

The answer depends on whether anyone on staff is dedicated to databases. Only about a third of respondents in DataStrike’s 2026 survey said their organization employs dedicated DBAs, and nearly a quarter said they would need five or more to keep up. That leaves most organizations choosing between two setups, a database MSP that takes on administration in full or one that works alongside an in-house DBA.

‍

What does a database MSP do when there’s no DBA on staff?

‍

In that case, a database MSP takes over day-to-day database administration in full, from monitoring and maintenance to incident response and upgrade planning. The IT director’s role shifts from doing the work to directing it, setting priorities and approving changes. This setup also fits the moment a long-time DBA leaves and much of what they knew about the environment leaves with them.

‍

In a full managed services arrangement, two questions matter more than usual. How will the provider learn and document your environment so that knowledge belongs to your company, and who is accountable when an outage happens overnight? DataStrike’s 10 Red Flags That Scream It’s Time to Go Fractional checklist covers the signs that outside database support makes more sense than a full-time hire.

‍

How does a database MSP work alongside an in-house DBA?

‍

For companies that employ DBAs, DataStrike’s survey report points to a blended model, with internal expertise working alongside managed services and fractional support, as the most effective way to keep performance steady and support long-term growth. The in-house team keeps ownership of the decisions, including business priorities and change approvals. The outside team covers what a small group can’t, like overnight and weekend coverage, routine maintenance, platforms nobody on staff specializes in and project spikes such as a migration or major upgrade.

‍

Most DBAs specialize by platform, so a SQL Server DBA and an Oracle DBA can share a title and very little else, and a blend lets a company running both cover each one properly. That frees in-house staff for the modernization work that only people inside the business can steer. When you compare providers for this setup, ask who approves changes and whether the same engineers handle your databases each time. The answers will tell you whether the arrangement adds capacity or becomes another vendor to manage.

‍

DataStrike supports both setups, from full 24x7x365 database administration for companies without a DBA to fractional coverage that works as an extension of an in-house team.

‍

The Services You Can Buy

‍

What are DBA services?

‍

DBA services, also called database administration services, are database administration work handled by an outside provider, either for a set number of hours or as full coverage of your databases. The two names are the same rose, and neither tells you which arrangement you’re getting. Platform-specific versions narrow the scope, such as SQL Server DBA services or Oracle DBA support services.

‍

Are database management services and database managed services the same thing?

‍

Yes, database management services and database managed services both describe provider-led care for your databases, typically monitoring, maintenance, performance tuning and support across platforms. The word “managed” is the part to pay attention to, because it signals that the provider owns the day-to-day health of your databases and is responsible for how they run. A company that offers this is often called a database managed service provider, or database MSP.

‍

What are managed database services?

‍

Managed database services usually mean a cloud provider’s hosted database, such as Amazon RDS or Azure SQL Database, also called database as a service (DBaaS). The cloud provider handles the servers underneath, plus routine work like engine patching and backups. Rearrange the words and you get a different flower. Query tuning, schema design, cost control and the question of why last night’s job ran slow still land with you. Some providers also use the phrase for their DBA services, so ask which one a proposal means.

‍

What is DBA as a service?

‍

DBA as a service, also sold as managed DBA services or DBA managed services, is DBA expertise delivered under a contract and priced by coverage level, so it can scale up or down without new hires. The name borrows from cloud software, and the comparison holds, since you subscribe to the expertise much as you’d subscribe to a platform.

‍

What is the difference between database consulting and managed services?

‍

Database consulting is project-based advice, such as an architecture review or a performance assessment, with the recommendations handed back to you to carry out. Managed services include the follow-through. At DataStrike, the experts who scope the work are the same experts who run it.

‍

What does a database migration consultant do?

‍

A database migration consultant plans and carries out a move, such as a SQL Server migration to Azure or a cloud database migration to AWS. The cutover is one date on the calendar, and the environment still needs care the morning after, so it helps when the team handling database migration services is the same one managing the database from then on.

‍

The Terms Behind the Bigger Picture

‍

What is data infrastructure?

‍

Data infrastructure is everything that holds your data and gets it where it needs to go, including databases, cloud platforms, business applications like Oracle EBS and the BI tools that report from all of them. Modernization and AI projects both depend on it, so problems at this layer tend to surface as delays further up. You may also hear it called the data estate, a term covered in DataStrike’s 10 Data & AI Terms to Know.

‍

What are managed data services?

‍

Managed data services, sometimes called data infrastructure services or managed data infrastructure services, extend the managed DBA idea across database, cloud, application and BI platforms under one provider. For a mid-market company, the draw is one contract and one set of experts who know how the pieces connect, with fewer handoffs between vendors when something goes wrong.

‍

What are data modernization services?

‍

Data modernization services bring older environments up to current versions and platforms, such as moving off end-of-life database versions or adopting a cloud data platform like Snowflake or Microsoft Fabric. Modernizing legacy systems was the top challenge IT leaders named for 2026 in DataStrike’s survey, cited by 46% of respondents. The work continues after each upgrade, since every modernized system becomes something to run and keep current, which is why modernization and managed services so often go together.

‍

What is an AI readiness assessment?

‍

An AI readiness assessment measures whether your data and infrastructure can support AI projects and what to fix first. AI readiness is the broader question of whether an organization is prepared to put AI to work. AI data readiness, sometimes called data readiness for AI, narrows it to the data itself and whether it’s accurate and well governed enough for a model to rely on. The gaps an assessment turns up often sit in the database layer, well before anyone builds a model.

‍

What is the difference between BI consulting and BI managed services?

‍

Business intelligence consulting helps you design and launch a platform, and BI managed services keep it running afterward. Power BI consulting, Snowflake consulting, Databricks consulting and Microsoft Fabric consulting follow the same pattern as database consulting. After launch, someone has to keep data models current and costs in check as usage grows, and that’s the work BI managed services cover across platforms including Power BI, Snowflake, Databricks and Microsoft Fabric.

‍

Whatever the Name on the Proposal

‍

Two questions get to the substance of any proposal quickly. Who will work on your environment, and how much of their time do you get? Who keeps it running after the project wraps, including at 2 a.m. on a holiday weekend?

‍

For a lot of mid-market companies, the answer is fractional support. DataStrike is a Pittsburgh-based managed services provider that has supported data infrastructure for nearly three decades. Our fractional support model gives companies senior, 100% onshore DBAs and engineers across database, cloud, application and BI platforms under one flexible contract.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

‍

What is the difference between a remote DBA and an in-house DBA?

‍

An in-house DBA is a dedicated employee who knows your business and owns your systems day to day. A remote DBA works through a provider and brings a wider bench of specialists, which adds after-hours coverage and expertise across more platforms. Some companies use both, with the remote team extending what the in-house DBA can cover.

‍

Is a remote DBA cheaper than a full-time DBA?

‍

It depends on how much coverage you need. A remote or fractional arrangement scales with the workload, while a full-time hire carries a fixed salary and benefits through heavy and light months alike. DataStrike runs the numbers in The Math Behind Fractional IT Support.

‍

How do you choose a database managed service provider?

‍

Start with who will do the work and whether you can reach those engineers directly, then compare platform coverage, 24x7 support and how pricing scales as your needs change. DataStrike’s Database MSP Decision Guide walks through eight factors to evaluate before choosing a partner.

‍

What should a database managed services contract include?

‍

Look for 24x7 monitoring, backup and recovery testing, performance tuning, patching and upgrades, and direct access to the engineers doing the work. If your environment includes cloud or BI platforms, ask whether the same team covers those too.

‍

Can one provider cover SQL Server, Oracle and cloud platforms?

‍

Yes, if the provider has deep expertise across each of them. DataStrike supports SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, MariaDB, SAP HANA and Redshift, along with AWS, Azure and Oracle Cloud.
